Choosing a wedding photographer can feel overwhelming. There are so many talented photographers in Ottawa, and every portfolio looks beautiful at first glance. So how do you choose the person you will trust with one of the most important days of your life?

I am Mélanie, an Ottawa wedding photographer. I have been photographing weddings since 2021, and my style is editorial and natural-light, focused on honest, unguarded moments. This guide will help you look past the prettiest highlights and find the photographer whose work, personality, and approach truly fit you.

Start with style, not price

Before you compare packages, decide what kind of photos you want to look back on. Do you love candid, documentary images that feel like real life? Do you love editorial portraits that feel like a magazine, but still look like you? Do you want light, airy images, or rich, moody tones?

My approach is a mix of both: I document your day as it unfolds, with natural light and real emotion, and I guide you gently for portraits so you feel relaxed, not posed. I never want you to look back and feel like you spent your wedding day performing for the camera.

Look at a photographer’s recent work and ask yourself: do these photos feel like a real wedding, or a styled shoot? Do the couples look comfortable? Do the colours and light feel consistent from one wedding to the next?

Ask to see full galleries

A highlight reel shows the best ten photos from a wedding. A full gallery shows what your gallery will actually look like: getting ready, the ceremony, family photos, portraits, speeches, and the dance floor, in all kinds of light.

When you look at a full gallery, notice:

  • Are the candid moments as strong as the portraits?
  • Do indoor and low-light photos still look beautiful?
  • Are family photos organized and flattering, not rushed?
  • Does the story of the day come through, from start to finish?

Any photographer you are seriously considering should be happy to share a full gallery or two. If they only share highlights, that is worth noting.

Meet your photographer before you book

You will spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else. You want someone who makes you feel calm, not stressed, and who you would be happy to have close during intimate moments.

A coffee chat or video call is the best way to know. Notice whether they listen to what matters to you, ask about your day, and explain their approach clearly. Notice too whether they ask about your venue, your timeline, and your families, because those details shape how they photograph your day.

I always suggest meeting first, because a good fit matters just as much as a good portfolio.

Questions to ask a wedding photographer

Take this list to your calls. The answers will help you compare photographers fairly.

About their work and style

  • How would you describe your photography style?
  • Can we see two or three full recent wedding galleries?
  • Have you photographed at our venue, or at venues like it?
  • How do you handle rain, low light, or a timeline that runs behind?

About the wedding day

  • Will you be the photographer on our wedding day?
  • Do you work with a second photographer, and when do you recommend one?
  • How much direction do you give during portraits?
  • How do you photograph family photos so they stay organized and quick?

About packages and delivery

  • What is included in your package, and what costs extra?
  • How many hours of coverage do you recommend for our day?
  • How will we receive our photos, and when can we expect them?
  • Do we receive printing rights for our personal use?
  • Collections start at $1,500. Main collections are Intimate $1,500 for 2 hours, Essential $3,000 for 6 hours, and Legacy $4,800 for 10 hours with an engagement session included.
  • You will receive sneak peeks within 48 hours, and your full high-resolution gallery within 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Couples typically receive 50 to 100 professionally edited high-resolution images per hour of coverage.
  • Travel within 50 kilometres of Ottawa is included. For weddings further away, travel is quoted on request — please reach out for a simple, transparent travel quote.

About booking

  • How far in advance do you usually book for peak season?
  • What is needed to reserve our date?
  • What happens if we need to change our date?
  • Please inquire as early as possible, especially for peak Saturdays. I take a limited number of weddings each season.

Write down the answers. When you compare photographers later, you will be glad you did.

Watch for red flags, gently

A photographer who cannot show full galleries, who will not put package details in writing, who promises an unrealistic number of photos or an impossibly fast turnaround, or who pressures you to book on the spot, is worth a second thought. The best photographers are clear, calm, and happy for you to take time to decide.

Ottawa-specific things to consider

Ottawa weddings have their own rhythm. Summer and early fall Saturdays book quickly, golden hour light in the Gatineau Hills is beautiful but brief, and winter weddings need a photographer who is comfortable with low light and indoor portraits. If your wedding is outdoors, ask about a rain plan for photos, not just for the ceremony. If your families speak French and English, as many Ottawa and Gatineau families do, it can help to work with a photographer who is comfortable in both languages.

Wherever your wedding is, choose someone whose work you love, whose full galleries you trust, and who makes you feel at ease.

Trust your feeling, then check the details

After you have looked at galleries and met a few photographers, you will usually have a feeling about who is right. Trust that feeling, and then check the practical details: package, hours, delivery, and date availability. When both the feeling and the details line up, you have found your photographer.

If you would like to talk about your wedding, I would love to hear your story.

Inquire about availability

I take a limited number of weddings each season so I can give every couple my full attention. Please get in touch to check your date, share your venue and timeline, and ask me any of the questions above. I am happy to share full galleries and talk through what coverage would suit your day best.
